Headgear is an orthodontic appliance used in the treatment of patients whose upper teeth are ahead of the lower teeth. Headgear creates a pulling action to restrict the forward growth of upper teeth and the maxillary jaw bone.

It is important to wear it at least 12 to 14 hours per day, EVERY DAY, with the majority of time spent while sleeping. We do not expect you to start out at that number of hours initially. Below is a schedule to follow for the first few days of wear. It will allow you to comfortably work up to those ideal hours.

Day 1: 2 hours
Day 2: 4 hours
Day 3: 6 hours
Day 4 to day 8: 8 hours (all night while sleeping)
Day 9: 10 hours
Day 10: 12+ hours

At this point the 12+ hours should be maintained DAILY until instructed otherwise.

NOTE: The hours DO NOT have to be consecutive!

Important Points to Remember

Placing and removing headgear should be done carefully. Most patients find it easier to insert the headgear by feel rather than by using a mirror. Do so by attaching the strap to one side of the metal bow, then place that side of the bow in your mouth (bumps or loops of the bow go downward) and insert it into the large tube on the cheek side of your tooth's band. Then insert the other side of the bow in the other tube (you may need to squeeze the bow to make it a little narrower to get it to fit). Finally, attach the strap with one hand, while supporting the bow with the other. Remove it in the same careful manner.

Please bring your headgear to every appointment so that we may check and adjust it. Headgear is a delicate instrument that is custom fit to each individual, so please do not make adjustments to it. Call us if you feel yours is not fitting properly.

Tender teeth are normal for the first few days. Don't be discouraged. The tenderness will subside as you adjust to the new pressure. Wear it consistently, as described above, but do not continually take it on and off. If discomfort is prolonged, please let us know.

Please refrain from physical activity while wearing headgear. It may result in harm to yourself or someone else, and may distort the appliance.

The strap is washable. Please contact our office for instructions.

As with any new appliance, the more the headgear is worn, the sooner your body will adapt to it. If you have any questions or problems, please do not hesitate to call our office.
