Dr. Brett Fidler, Orthodontist

Gum infections occasionally appear during the course of orthodontic treatment. They are generally the result of food particles, like a popcorn hull, becoming lodged under the gums. They appear as an area of redness and swelling that bleeds easily and is uncomfortable. Fortunately, with conscientious home care, the symptoms can usually be reduced within 24 hours and eliminated in 5 to 10 days using the following methods.

Brush and Floss
Using your toothbrush, gently massage the area with a rotating motion to dislodge the particle and speed healing of the tissue. Finish by flossing the area, as directed originally.

Rinse with Salt Water
With a solution of one-half teaspoon salt stirred into a full glass of warm water, force the water between the teeth of the affected area, spit and repeat. Try to rinse and swish at least 2 to 3 glasses a day.

- OR-

Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
If the infection does not respond to the salt-water rinses, mix a solution of ½ hydrogen peroxide (3%) and ½ water, and rinse as directed above.

Call for an Appointment
The infected area should improve within one week, but if it does not, or becomes worse, please phone us for an emergency appointment. Treatment usually consists of removing the irritant and cleansing the affected area by flushing with water. However, antibiotics or minor gum surgery may be needed in extreme cases.
