Rubber bands (elastics) are usually worn to improve the fit of upper and lower teeth.
Wear rubber bands as instructed, removing them only for eating and for sports that require the use of a mouth guard.
Change the rubber bands at least 2 times a day. Replace them with fresh bands after eating and brushing your teeth, and before going to bed. Changing them ensures strong, resilient rubber bands that will apply the constant force needed to move your teeth into final alignment.
Stop wearing your rubber bands and call for an appointment if:
- An archwire breaks
- A hook where you attach the rubber bands breaks off
- A bond or band where you attach your rubber band becomes loose
- You can't recall how to wear them or you need more, or
- Your jaw joint becomes sore.
REMEMBER: Your cooperation is essential for the completion of this final stage, so wear your rubber bands diligently.
